Gold Rum gets its colour from ageing in wooden barrels – usually charred white oak barrels at that.

At least, that’s the traditional way.

Some Golden Rums get the colour with the additional of caramel.

What Flavour Does Gold Rum Have?

Gold Rum tends to have a more flavour and is stronger-tasting.

It usually can be considered a midway point between lighter and darker rums.

If the Golden Rum was made such using Caramel, you can expect a sweeter taste.

What is Gold Rum Used for?

Gold Rum typically has tonnes of flavour.

It can be mixed into a cocktail, served with a mixer, or even just on the rocks. It all works! Trust me, I’ve sampled it a lot.

Cocktail-wise, probably the most popular cocktail with Gold Rum would have to be the Mai Tai.

Here, we mix Gold Rum with Orange Curacao, Lime Juice, and Orgeat Syrup to create something delicious and refreshing.

Gold Rum vs Dark Rum

The difference between Gold and Dark rums is basically based on the maturing process.

All rums begin as light rums, then aged in different types of casks.

For example, White Rums are aged in Stainless Steel tanks to so they remain pefectly clear.

Gold Rum is aged in plain Oak Barrels, where as Dark Rum is aged in darker oak barrels for longer.

TL;DR: The difference is the aging process and the vessel the brew is aged in.

Gold Rum vs Spiced Rum

Despite generally being darker, Spiced Rum is actually based on Spiced Rum.

Spiced Rums are generally darker because of the herbs, spices, and sometimes caramel that are used to create them.
