Difford’s Guide suggests the cocktail was created at some point in the late 80s. The ingredients closely resemble the Sex on the Beach cocktail (there’s no orange juice, but more cranberry juice), which was invented in 1987 so the timeline fits.
It was most likely a variation of the Sex on the Beach that caught on…or maybe visa versa.
Taste Atlas suggests the cocktail was born in the First Edition bar in Bayside, New York.
