The History of the Bay Breeze

The Bay Breeze (much like the Sea Breeze) is a child of the Cape Codder cocktail.

What I mean by that is: the Cape Codder, which is made up of Vodka and Cranberry Juice, forms the base of the Bay Breeze (and the Sea Breeze).

The Bay Breeze adds Pineapple Juice to the Vodka and Cranberry Juice mixture, whereas the Sea Breeze adds Grapefruit Juice instead.

Scary Cranberries

Like the Sea Breeze, the Bay Breeze cocktail origins come from the Cranberry scare of 1959. Yes. A Cranberry scare. I’m not making this up.

In 1959, a small crop of Cranberries from the Pacific Northwest was found to contain a herbicide called Aminotriazol. Aminotriazol was controversial at the time because it was found to cause abnormal growths in lab rats

The story was sensationalised by Arthur S. Flemming, the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, who advised that if people didn’t know where their Cranberries came from, they shouldn’t buy them.

Overnight the $50 million a year Cranberry market took a nose dive.

The Comeback of the Cranberry

It took quite a while for the Cranberry market to recover.

It was a collective of Cranberry growers, who went by the name Ocean Spray, who spearheaded the comeback of the Cranberry.

They did this by creating and distributing Cranberry-based recipe booklets.

These booklets included both cooking and cocktail recipes and helped to improve the popularity of Cranberries after the 1959 scare.

Both the Sea Breeze and the Bay Breeze cocktail recipes were in this Ocean Spray recipe booklet.
