Who Created the Between the Sheets Drink?

The history of the Between the Sheets cocktail is somewhat up for dispute.

I mean, there 3 different origin stories out there.

Harry’s New York Bar

One suggestion is that the cocktail was created by Harry MacElhone at Harry’s New York Bar, Paris at some point in the 1930s.

MacElhone created the classic Sidecar cocktail and since the Between the Sheets is thought to be an off-shoot of that classic, this theory makes the most sense.

The Berkeley

Other stories suggest the manager of The Berkeley Hotel, London, a Mr. Polly, created the cocktail in 1921.

Okay, great. Is that all there is to it? It seems so.

Moving on…

Ladies of the Night

And the final origin story is that of a more seedy nature. Apparently, the drink was created in French brothels to be drunk as an Aperitif.

That could potentially explain the cocktail’s name…

But again, distinctly lacking detail.

I’m landing on the side of the Harry’s New York Bar origin story – what about you guys?

Why is it called Between the Sheets?

Where it got the name Between the Sheets in some dispute, as is the drinks history.

Some suggest the name is derived from how boozy the drink was. The implication being that drinkers of the cocktail would usually end up in bed together.

Kind of gross.

Another suggestion points to one of the cocktail creation stories being in a French brothel in the 1920s. The cocktail was drunk by prostitutes and so the Between the Sheets name was attributed to it.

What’s in a Between the Sheets drink?

This boozy cocktail consists of Cognac, White Rum, Triple Sec, and Lemon Juice.

Here are our recommendations, or just jump directly to the Between the Sheets recipe:

Cognac

Cognac is a variety of Brandy.

It’s named after Cognac, France and certain production methods are required to make sure the Brandy may be named Cognac.

This production methods include:

  •  Ugni blanc grapes must be used.
  • The Brandy must be twice distilled in copper stills.
  • The Brandy must aged at least 2 years in Oak barrels.

Only then can it be called Cognac. Wowzers.

And even then, there are grades of Cognac:

  • V.S. (Very Special) or 3 stars. This means that the Brandy has been aged for at least 2 years in a cask.
  • V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale) or Reserve. This is where the Brandy has been aged for at least 4 years in a cask.
  • Napoléon. This is where the Brandy is aged at least 6 years.
  • XO (Extra Old). This is where the Brandy is aged at least 10 years.
  • XXO (Extra Extra Old). This is where the Brandy is aged for at least 14 years.
  • Hors d’âge (Beyond Age). This is where the Brandy is beyond the official age scales.

I mean, that’s some grading list. I’d wager by the end of that list you’d need to be a millionaire to sample those Cognac’s.

ANYWAY… the Cognac we recommend is:

White Rum

All Rum is made from fermenting and then distilling sugar cane molasses or sugar cane juice, but White Rum has an ageing process that makes the liquor clear.

Rum is usually aged for at least one year and the contained in which it is aged determines the colour it will be.

In Bourbon or Wooden casks, the Rum will become a dark brown colour, but in a stainless steel tanks the rum remains colourless.

White Rum is clear because it’s aged in a stainless steel tank.

Pretty cool, huh?

For White Rum, we recommend:

Triple Sec

Triple Sec is a style of Orange Liqueur and you can read more about it in our detailed article.

For Triple Sec, we recommend:

Here are our recommendations on what Cocktail equipment you need for the Between the Sheets recipe.

Or just jump directly to the recipe.

Cocktail Shaker

Cocktail shakers improve the taste of cocktails. It’s a fact.

There’s a reason that famed British spy James Bonds says “shaken, not stirred”. And that reason is: because it tastes better.

If you don’t already have a cocktail shaker set, you might want to check out our detailed Cocktail Shaker comparison article.

But to cut a long story short, here’s the cocktail shaker we recommend:

Strainer

If you (or perhaps the person your buying for) don’t have a Hawthorne strainer as part of a cocktail shaker set, it’s a great, and incredibly useful, cocktail gift you need in your cocktail toolbox.

The strainer is typically used to remove the ice (or any other unwanted solid ingredients) from your cocktail as it’s poured from the cocktail shaker into your glass.

For a Hawthorne Strainer, we recommend:

Jigger

It’s important to get the mix of any cocktail right. The measurements are set for a reason – to specify a tried, tested, and tasty drink.

A jigger is going to help you get those perfect measurements – after all, it is what the pro’s use.

For a jigger, we recommend:

Lemon Squeezer

Getting a lemon squeezer will change your life.

When you make as many cocktail as I do squeezing out lemons and limes, a lemon squeezer is a life saver. It makes it easier to get the juice and you also typically get more juice out of the fruit.

It just makes sense.

If you are interested in a Lemon Squeezer, here’s the one we recommend:

Cocktail Glass

This cocktail recipe tastes great, but let’s make it look great too.

Having the right glass for the right cocktail always makes the experience more enjoyable in my experience.

And the right glass is a cocktail glass.
